The New Materials Group (FA-3) at the University of Vigo will host a Seminar in the frame of the JSPS Core-to-Core Advanced Research Network "International Collaborative Research Center on Atomically Controlled Processing for Ultralarge Scale Integration", coordinated by Prof. J. Murota from the Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC) of the Tohoku University in Sendai (Japan).

The seminar will be held from September 4th to 6th at the Industrial Engineering School of the University of Vigo and aims to deepen existing as well as establishing new cooperations between the members of the JSPS (Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science) and all participants.

Advanced Research Network group members are invited to submit abstracts and to give 20 - 30 min talks at the joint seminar. Non members are also invited to submit abstracts and will have the opportunity to present either oral or poster contributions during the Seminar.

About Vigo

Located in southern Galicia, a north-western region of Spain, the region is best known for being the end of St. James' Way, a Christian pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela that has existed since the Middle Ages. With a population of around 300.000, Vigo is the largest city in Galicia, although the number of people who actually work, study and live in the city may reach half a million. The city is located close to the Portuguese border on the Atlantic coast and is well known as a privileged destination for cruise lines due to its beautiful bay and sandy beaches, as well as its excellent sea-food. Moreover, it is the driving industrial and economic force of Galicia with a major fishing port and important maritime and automobile industries. Its natural resources allow the region to be one of Europe's biggest exporters of mussels, granite, slate and silica..

Vigo is placed 42º 14" N, 8º 45" W, and due to the beneficial influence of the Gulf Stream its climate is mild. The standard climatic average values in September are:

Average temperature 18.0 ºC (64.4 ºF)
Maximum temperature 22.4 ºC (72.2 ºF)
Minimum temperature 13.6 ºC (56.5 ºF)
Relative humidity 78%
Rainfall day probability 25%

Cloudless day probability

30%

During the conference days,
sunrise will be about 8:10 and sunset about 20:50.

Travel

By air:
Peinador is Vigo's airport (IATA code VGO) and has several daily direct flights to the international airports of
- Madrid (MAD)
- Barcelona (BCN)
- Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG)
- London-Heathrow (LHR)

The airport is about 10 km from the centre of Vigo. The most comfortable way of reaching a destination in the city from the airport is to take a taxi, which costs about 25 Euro. There is also a bus (line C9A) that runs every hour and costs about 1.50 Euro.

Alternative nearby airports:
Santiago de Compostela (SCQ), about 100 km north from Vigo. (Santiago airport web page) (Destinations SCQ)
Porto (Portugal) (OPO) about 150 km south from Vigo. (Porto airport web page) (Destinations OPO)

By train
Vigo - Guixar railway station is near the city centre. There are several daily connections with nearby cities (Pontevedra, Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña) and two daily connections with Madrid, Barcelona and Porto (Portugal).
